Remember to ALWAYS use your best judgement.

Always take a moment to consider the suitability of the weather, trail conditions, your horsemanship skills, the skills of those in your party, and perhaps the most important...the physical and mental condition of your horses before each trip.

This will work with the Smart Phone Avanza App. If you load these maps into the Avanza App, you will see a blue dot that indicates your position on that trail. Super simple to use and you can't get lost. You do not need active cell phone coverage to use the app.

Onion Creek and Profesor Valley Horse trails

Where to camp with horses in
the Greater Moab area.

Camping location 1:

Upper Onion Creek Group Site A. Highway 128

This is a beautiful camp location on BLM Ground. It is located off Highway 128 (IE the River Road), North/East of Moab. Views include the famous Fisher Towers, La Sal mountains and Professor Valley, where so many classic Western movies were filmed. Amenities include: 4 Cedar Post-n-rail corrals W/ metal gates, a picnic table, fire ring, and live water in Onion Creek directly beside camp. There are horse trails in all directions (see downloadable PDF maps above). The down side is it's a BLM group site so it's a bit expensive and there is no potable water. Here is a promotional video done by our chapter showing the amenities.
Here is the link to recreation.gov where you can book the site. You may be required to call the BLM Moab field office because they tend to prefer campers with horses only. You may also ask for a discount if you are a small party.

Camping location 2:

Courthouse Rock Campground and corrals. Highway 191

This is a fantastic location if you want to ride multi-day trails directly from Camp. It is located off Highway 191, 16 miles north of Moab or about 2 miles south of the Canyonlands Field Airport then 1.5 miles west on the Mill Canyon Road. Amenities include 12 campsites with camp #5 and #6 being exra-large and reservable for people traveling with horses. There are four new corral panel corrals. There are picnic tables, fire rings, there is a pit toilet and shade arbors, there on the pad. Here's a promotional video showing the recent expansion and amenities of the Courthouse Rock Campground. Here is link to recreation.gov where you can book the site.

Camping location 3:

Kens Lake Campground and corrals. Highway 127 (La Sal Mn loop Road.)

This is Large campground with 48 camp sites Located just south of Moab. Any of the camps can be used with horses but the group site A has 3 large (20' X 20') pipe corrals. The amenities include: Picnic Tables, campfire rings, pit toilets, grill stands, and some have shade arbors. "Ride from Camp" Horse trails exist but are limited. all campsites are close to Ken's Lake. There is a nice trail around the lake and one over to Flat Pass/Mill Creek area. You can also ride up the valley toward Pack Creek and the La Sal Mountains. Here is a promotional video our chapter did that shows the site's amenities. Here is link to recreation.gov where you can book the site.

Camping location 4:

Lone Mesa Group site, off highway 214 (Dead Horse Point Road)

Lone Mesa group site Camp A off Highway 214. This camp sits at the base of Lone Mesa with amazing views of the Canyon Country.
